The cost of the truth

The last 6 months or so have absolutely flown by. And this isn't exactly a good thing. I've been through a very rough spot since I last checked in. I don't really have the time or desire to go over everything in too much detail, but I'll gloss over it. Last time I posted was to let everyone know that I'd been laid off from This Week in iPad.(The show is on hiatus as far as I know.) Since then I've had and lost 4 different jobs and have spent about 90% of my time unemployed. Then I found a great job in sales(I know I've spent more time than I should railing against sales, but this was the best job I've seen since I left my old position in 2009) but one which required a trade license. Not too much of a problem I was told, just apply and you'll get it. So I went to the office to get my license and I'm rejected. You see, the trade license required a background check, and I'd listed things on the application(I figured I might as well be honest about it since they'd find out anyway) and was told they'd need confirmation from Colorado regarding the incidents I'd mentioned. So I go to get what I need and now, more than a month later I am still waiting. I might have the job if and or when I get my license, I might not. I simply don't know. And I am quickly running out of money to wait.

So that's where I am. I have watched Conan O'Brien's commencement speech at Dartmouth many times recently and one thing pops out to me. He says during the speech about how losing everything had made him appreciate what's really important. He'd had one of the most rewarding years of his life after he lost what he'd worked his entire career the achieve. And in the last 6 months I've lost almost everything I thought was important. My car, my MacBook, my laptop, both my iPhones, and many of the various widgets I'd been accumulating since I came to Vegas. But despite this I'm still alive, the sun continues to rise, and every day people continue to live their lives. I have learned a few very important things during my time in purgatory. First and foremost, there are more important things to life than the latest tech gadget. I cannot measure my happiness through what version of iOS I am running. Second, I am not an employee. I have spent the last decade learning this one, and the journey that led me to this could fill several posts, but what cemented it for me was an interview. I'd been trying to break into the tech industry for a long time and when I made the connection, the owner of the business asked me the most important question I have encountered in my entire life. She asked me "where do you see yourself in 7 years?" I naturally said that I thought I'd be a business owner(since that was the truth). I would work very hard for her while I was there, but ultimately, I wanted to work for myself. That wasn't the correct answer. She wanted an employee. Someone who would work for her for the next 20 years. I desperately tried to backtrack but the window had closed. Before she cut me off she said the thing that has echoed ever since "I want to take a few days and really think about what you want. Then get back to me." So I did. And I came through the other side with an epiphany. It's not that I wanted to create a business and deal with payroll and drama and workman's comp etc, etc, etc. I wanted to have an income where I worked for myself. I wanted to be able to pay my bills using my own skills, and ultimately create a passive income. My ultimate goal is to have more money everyday when I wake up than when I go to bed. Until then, I worked to be able to start my "business". Having said that, I have become tired of going out and putting on the smile and trying to get someone to take a chance on me. I will never be an employee. I can be a worker bee if the situation calls for it, but I'll always be looking for the exit.

Finally, I have had a "why didn't I think of that sooner?" moment. I live about a mile and a half from the largest tourist destination by area on earth. Every year the equivalent of every man, woman and child in Canada come from all over the planet to the Las Vegas Strip. They spend close to $15 billion every year. For most people this means that the Strip is a great place to apply for a job. And until recently, that was true. Now, the fact is that the meteoric unemployment level combined with the fact that the Strip's revenues are down mean that for the most part the casinos are not hiring. But there's a vibrant culture outside the hotels. On the sidewalks, there are scores of street performers and buskers making a great income(as an aside, I didn't realize how well they did until I was walking from one side to the other when I saw a person with a 5 gallon bucket FULL of cash. I was slack jawed. Outside the poker room, I'd never seen that much cash at one time in person. It had to be over a $1,000 in $1's and $5's.) For most people it would be something neat to watch. But I have something most people don't. Since I was 17, I have been yo-yoing. I have thousands and thousands of hours of practice and I can perform well enough to have people tip me. It's happened before(I haven't done it in 6 years, but I have made money yo-yoing) and I am VERY confident it will happen again. I can walk to the strip, I own everything I need to begin, and best of all, the weather is changing. Winter is coming. Most people who live here for any decent amount of time acclimate and get very cold once the temperature sinks below about 70ºF. I don't. I feel fine in those temperatures and ones much less than them. Best of all, street performing is well protected by court precedent, and the police know it. So the odds are very good that I won't be harassed. Of course, nothing's certain but I think unless I hit someone(something I've never done) I should be ok. When I started, we lived in a VERY cramped apartment and I had to practice in an area about 2 feet across. So I am very used to confined spaces. And I won't be trying anything high risk while I'm out there. After all, no one wants to watch someone wind a string or work out a knot.

There's me in a nutshell. Big changes have come and bigger changes on the way. For the first time in a LONG time I can say this with confidence: I'm goin' up! $$ :)

End of an era

For the past 9 months or so, I have been writing up shownotes for episodes of This Week in iPad. I've really enjoyed the experience, and it's been great being able to fund my home Internet connection with the proceeds from the job. Sadly, the producers of the show has decided to "go in a different direction" which means I'm not doing it any more. It's ok though. In my opinion the show has run it's course and it's time to move on. I'm going to be redesigning the blog shortly, but until then the weekly This Week in iPad posts are no more.

My first e-job:

Planet of the Apps

NBC Nightly News
Michelle's first app this week is NBC Nightly News. This app lets users view the news content right on their iPad.

Calc Bot
Jacob's first app this week is Calc Bot from Tapbots. It's a calculator that really improves the native one on the iPad. Jacob thinks it's probably not worth the price. He recommends PCalc Lite instead.

MyPad 2
Michelle's next app is MyPad 2. The wonderful people at Facebook have decided that they don't want to develop a native app for the iPad so there are lots of developers who have taken up the cause. Michelle likes this one, but it's far from perfect. She gives it 3.5/5.

Hipster City Cycle
Jacob's last app this week is Hipster City Cycle. It's an iPhone game, but because it's already intentionally pixelated, it looks ok blown up. Jacob likes it.

We reviewed Hipster City based on a viewer suggestion. If you have an app you'd like us to review, or a comment about the show you can email us at iPad@ThisWeekin.com, or you can find us on Twitter @TWiiPad.

Planet of the Apps

SnagFilms
Michelle's first app this week is SnagFilms. This app takes documentaries from the website, SnagFilms.com and ports it to the iPad with a great user interface.

Catch Notes
Jacob's first app this week, Catch Notes is described by the producers of the show as a "poor man's Evernote but this doesn't do the app justice. Jacob doesn't agree with that, he thinks the simplicity of the app is a good thing. That said, it is buggy for now. Overall, the app is a good effort, and the price is right, but this app does need polishing. It'll be good in a month or so.

Idea Sketch
Michelle's next app is Idea Sketch. This app is going along the same lines of a Catch Notes, or Evernote, but it creates flow charts. It's designed as an alternative to loading Word or Pages.

Bike Maps
Jacob's final app this week is Bike Maps. This app helps you find out the best path to take while on a bike ride. Some streets aren't exactly bike friendly and it's much better to avoid them if at all possible. The only sticking point is that most cities Jacob checked were great, your city might be different.

Thanks for watching, and see you next week!

The employment process at the Apple Store or How to hire for your cult

Last year, I found myself in a unique situation where I has a chance to peek behind the curtain at one of the most secretive companies in technology. I had been in sales for a few years and was told I would be needing a new job. I had been going to the Apple store for a long while and decided that if I spent my spare time there, I might as well try to work there. I went to my local store and applied using a computer there. I applied for a specialist position with the company and waited.

Before I go into too much detail about the process, I want to touch a bit on the history of the store. In early 2000, Steve Jobs recruited Ron Johnson from Target to create a new store that would feature Apple products. Steve had noticed that in most retail stores at the time, Apple products were displayed in the back of stores, and often sold by people who didn't understand them. Ron created the store experience from scratch using concierge desks as his inspiration. Ten years and over 300 store later, the Apple store has become a huge success and a major revenue stream for Apple. In my hometown of Las Vegas, there are 3 stores. Two on The Strip, and one 3 miles south on Las Vegas Boulevard. I applied for all 3.

Prior to the Apple store, I'd become accustomed to a certain process when it comes to hiring. Apply to a company, get a call back, go for interview, get job. Because of this, I assumed the process would take a few weeks at the most. I applied to the company with in June of 2010 and then I waited for a call/email. And waited. Two weeks later, I went to the store to follow up about the application. The manager of the store spoke to me and put me through my first interview. He said he was impressed and I would hear back from him later. And then nothing. Again.

Three month later, I checked my email and the account I used for my Apple ID had a message from Apple. I'd been invited to a "Group interview" where I would be interviewing with roughly 60 other people. The time came and I went to a local hotel not knowing what I was getting in to. They introduced all the employees by name and after that everyone in the group did the same. We then watched a video about the Apple store and after, we broke up into groups of 3-4 people. The idea was to play specialist in several hypothetical scenarios designed to see which people knew the products and which didn't. After that, there was a written test about Apple products with questions like "What's the difference between an iPhone 3GS and an iPhone 4" and "define RAM to someone who's buying their first computer ever." After this, we shook hands and went home. About two hours later, I received a call from Apple to come back the next day for a "panel interview". I went and interviewed with three Apple employees(interestingly, only one was in management) with 2 other people. We were given random questions like "describe a difficult customer and what you did to handle him/her." Once we answered all the questions they had, we were told that if we made it through this interview, we'd come back the next day for the "final" interview with the regional manager for Las Vegas.

In case you're keeping track, that's 4 interviews for an entry level retail position. I understand that the process to be an engineer or developer at a company is intense, but this isn't a position that requires a graduate level education. But because Apple has a unique user base, they can be that selective. And it's that selectivity that ensures the continued success of the store. Not anyone can work there. And the employees know it. Because of the fact that Apple retail is more selective than Harvard, the people who get in feel like they've won the lottery. Even though they'd likely be paid the same at Best Buy, the attrition rate at the Apple store is nonexistent. Next time you're in the Apple store look at the employees. Odds are you won't see anyone who isn't thrilled to be there. And that's the biggest secret I learned going through the process. The success of the Apple store comes from several factors, but the biggest one is the people in the store itself.

Epiloge: I didn't get the job. Oh well. It all worked out for the best.

Penultimate
Jacob's first app this week is Penultimate for iPad. Many moons ago, Jacob and Lon reviewed note taking apps and the majority of them sucked. Not so with this app. It isn't chocked full of features but it does take notes very well. Also, the app features a tutorial that uses the app itself, rather than videos or animation. Jacob recommends this one.

Squarespace
Michelle's first app this week is the free Squarespace for iPad app. You can edit your website, moderate comments, and check your website's stats all from your iPad.

Set in style
Next, Jacob looks at Set in Style. This app, like the Martha Stewart cookie app is a great example of content being displayed on the iPad in an innovative way. It's not prefect, but it's very good and it's free.

Groupon
Michelle's next app is Groupon HD. You can buy groupon deals right from the iPad and take them with you.

Frisbee Forever
Jacob's final app this week is Frisbee Forever. Although it is a fun game, Jacob isn't really in to casual gaming. Having said that he did enjoy it and it is free.

Walgreens
Michelle's final app this week is the Walgreens for iPad app. It's a good way to manage prescriptions and locate stores and shop. Plus you can order photo prints and pick them up in the store.

See you next week!

Hitpad
Michelle's next app this week is Hitpad. This app takes content from social media sites and aggregates it for you. It has a great interface and it's free.

Cool Hunting
Michelle's next app is called Cool Hunting. The app syndicates the content from the website, coolhunting.com.

NFL '11
Next up, Jacob looks at the NFL '11 app. Unfortunately with no season to cover, and none planned so far, the app is a bit low on content.

iheartradio
Michelle's final app this week is iheartradio. It's a great app that streams over 750 radio stations from all over the country. It's also free as well.

NBA Jam
Jacob's final app is NBA Jam. This app is the classic SNES and SEGA Genesis experience on your iPad. If you grew up playing this game, it's a great investment if only for the nostalgia aspect.

iPad 2 supply line broken
The parts that make up the new iPad come from all around the globe but there are a few that are manufactured in areas affected by last week's earthquake and tsunami. Key among them is the NAND flash memory chips the iPad uses for it's storage. Jacob theorized that Apple has all the supply they'd need since they've been ordering in massive volume. That said, if the plants remain offline for the longer term, say several months, then the supply chain might be disrupted.

iPad 2 review
While he was away, Jacob managed to get an iPad 2. He says that the new iPad is noticeably thinner and lighter, and the smart cover is a great accessory, but he's hesitant to recommend it for someone who already has an iPad and may be on the fence about it. Also he thinks the camera sucks. So bottom line, until he sees what the next version of iOS does with the hardware, if you don't have an iPad yet, get the iPad 2. If you do and are planning on selling your iPad 1, get it. If you don't want to sell your current iPad, you should probably wait.

Content Creation

GarageBand
Jacob's first app this week is GarageBand. It allows users to create music on several virtual instruments and create up to 8 track recordings.

Andrea's first app this week is eBook Magic an app that allows users to create scrapbooks on their iPad.

iMovie
Jacob's next app is iMovie. It works as advertised, and Jacob recommends it.

ArtRage
Andrea's final app this week is called ArtRage. She thinks it's too hard to use, and it's not intuitive at all. She thinks you should skip this one.

Winner:
Both Andrea and Jacob agree that GarageBand wins this week.

Redesign coming soon

When I set up my blog last year, I did so rather laissez-faire. Now I realize that I'm not happy with the way the blog looks, and I'm going to redesign the appearance from scratch. Look for it soon. kthxbai. :)

You have a lot of options when you want to buy or transfer your domain. Some of them are confusing, and try to trick you into making additional purchases of features you don't need. Hover wants to change all that. It's simple, neat, clean, and they're trying to make purchasing a domain EASIER. The prices are clearly labeled and don't change, and there are even helpful video tutorials on the front page to help you make decisions that are best for you. They don't have a "hold" system at Hover HQ. If you call them, the phone rings until someone picks it up and talks to you! Also, private registration is included in the price, they're the only registrar offering that. And you can create your own nameservers and A records. For a 10% discount, use promo code WEEK. To check it out, and buy your first domain, go to http://week.hover.com Also, to transfer a domain to Hover and waive the normal $25 fee, just call them at (866) 731-6556 and mention our code WEEK.
But wait, there's MORE!
We are giving away 2 $50 iTunes gift cards and all you need to do to enter is email your receipt from Hover to ipad@thisweekin.com for a chance to win. You can enter as many times as you like, but each entry has to be a transfer. So if you have 10 domains you'd like to transfer, send us all 10 receipts, and you'll be entered 10 times!
Also, thank them on twitter @hover.

iPad 2!
The show airs live every Friday at 4:30 so the iPad hadn't launched while the show was running. Andrea and Michelle concentrated on the differences between the original, and the iPad 2, and the so called "smart covers". As an aside, both Andrea and Michelle agree that having an iPad is a bonus for impressing women. Guys, take note.

Planet of the Apps

Music Apps
Andrea featured the foxL personal speaker.

Air Jam
Michell's first app this week comes from Pioneer Electronics. It's called Air Jam and it allows users to wirelessly stream music directly form your iPad to Pioneer electronic equipment. The app is basically designed as a value add for people who have purchased Pioneer receivers.

Vevo HD
Andrea's first app this week is Vevo HD. The app does require WiFi to work properly, but it features much more than just music videos. You can find info about your favorite artist, see their Twitter feed, and even find their concert schedule, and even purchase tickets right from the app.

SXSW Go
Michelle's next app is a topical one. It's for the South by Southwest Music, Film, and Interactive Festival in Austin, TX. The app is called SXSW GO and it provides users the ability to explore the event, and find out what's happening at the event. Plus it's free.

Discovr
Andrea's last app this week is called Discovr. It helps users discover new music based on what they like now. It shows branches of bands and artists related to the artists you enter. And you can see any band you'd like. It's a great way to discover new music, and preview and buy right from the app.

Winner: Andrea and Michelle agree that Discovr wins this week.

As always, you can tweet us @TWiiPad and you can always email the show at ipad@thisweekin.com.

Thanks for watching and we'll see you next week!

The retail distribution strategy of Apple INC or No iPad for you

Economic theory states that in order for a sale to occur, there must be 3 factors: The seller must have product to sell and the buyer must be willing and able to purchase the product. I want an iPad 2. I have the money to purchase an iPad 2. But I do not have an iPad 2. And I'm unlikely to get one in the next week.

Why? Because Apple stores citywide(I'm in Las Vegas), are totally sold out. And the stores won't receive any more until Monday at the earliest. Now, I understand fully that demand for the iPad 2 would likely be at historically high levels for months on end, just like it did for the original. But this is different. When you know that based on prior history that the demand level at launch was be X, it's logical to imply that the demand for the next generation of the product will at least match X, market conditions being equal. So it's highly unlikely that the demand levels took Apple by surprise. From a manufacturing perspective, the factories in Shenzhen have been working 24/7 and Apple has locked up all the manufacturing capacity it needs. It also knows how to ship products in large volume.

Please let me make clear that I have no inside information about Apple, it's supply chain, or it's retail policies. Having said that, I think that the most plausible reason that Apple is delaying the roll out of the iPad is because they can. There exists a long and storied history of businesses that have flipped the script on the usual customer service dynamic. And have thrived in doing so. Basically, Apple has decided that they will sell these devices on their terms because they have a proven history that people will buy at whatever price Apple feels like selling. They have a product that people want and rather than sell them as fast as possible, they'd rather have a steady stream of profits. In other words, they'd rather have 3 or 4 very good quarters, than 1 fantastically amazing quarter, 2 very good quarters, and 1 ok quarter until the iPad 3 launches.(As an aside, Apple need not worry about the holday quarter. They'll do just fine without doing a new iPad until next year.) It's become akin to the Soup Nazi episode on Seinfeld.

While I can fully understand this logic in most places, this is Las Vegas. And they ran out a full 10 hours before the stores close. That means that for the next 10 hours people came in to the store, played with the demo iPad units, and fell in love with the product enough to buy it. How many scores of sales did they miss out on? This is a unique town. People come here from all over the planet to relax, have fun and do things they wouldn't dare at home. That's a major reason why I moved here. And yet, Apple, in their infinite wisdom decided to leave what could be tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars on the table. There are few rules in sales, but one that is as old as time itself is you don't leave money on the table. Apple could've charged more for the iPad 2. Their policies would certainly indicate that was the goal. But Steve and friends instead decided to drastically limit the supply of their product, without the resultant increase in price. Why? Ultimately I don't know. But I do know it's very disheartening to go to the Apple store expecting to get a new iPad, only to have the young lady at the store say "No iPad for you!" And so there we leave this discussion. For now at least, no iPad for me. :(

If you like rants like this and would like them in slightly smaller doses, you can follow me on twitter. Thanks for reading, and feel free to comment.

This Week in iPad 2

Cold Open
Today on This Week in iPad, Lon Harris returns to review the Inception and The Dark Knight apps, we look at The Syndicate! HD in our game of the week, and something happened in San Francisco. Maybe you heard about it. All that and more on This Week in iPad.

Game of the Week!
This weeks game of the week is The Syndicate! HD a compulsion loop game along the lines of We Rule or Farmville. While Lon thinks the graphics are great, the game quickly becomes repetitive and the music is awful. It is free but the game play is designed to encourage in app purchase so buyer beware.

iPad 2!!!
This week, Apple finally unveiled the next iPad at a special event at the Yerba Buena center for the arts. The iPad 2 will be thinner than an iPhone 4, lighter than the current iPad, feature a dual core processor, and be available on both AT&T and Verizon at launch. The iPad 2 will also be available in black and white from the first day, and will have front and rear facing cameras. Here's the video in case you missed it:

The iPad 2 wasn't the only new product that debuted at the event. Apple has also created a line of smart covers for the new iPad that use magnetic clasps to align on to the face of the iPad and when they're removed, the iPad automatically wakes up. Here's the video Apple made showing the smart covers in action:

Planet of the Apps

Movie Apps

Inception and Dark Knight
Lon looked at the Inception app this week and he thinks the app is ok. That said, the app is overly expensive and doesn't allow the movie to be imported into your iTunes on your computer. When the iPad 2 comes out, the HDMI connector will allow the movie to be broadcast to your TV in 1080p. Jacob looked at The Dark Knight and found many of the same issues Lon did. The consensus this week is that Blu-ray is still the best way to purchase content for now but that digital media continues to gain territory and these apps represent a great step forward.

Thanks to Lon Harris for coming back this week for Andrea. You can find him on Twitter @Lons and you can subscribe to his podcast at youtube.com/LonsTV. Thanks for watching and we'll see you next week!

An Entrepreneur's apology

I've lived for nearly 30 years and in that time I've only regretted 3 decisions I've made. The other two are at this point irrelevant(I can't change what happen as a result of my actions) The third occurred today. The last time I played poker was when the great entrepreneur Jason Calacanis came to town for the World Series of Poker. During that session I was patient, I played well and I had a read for the table In the 4 odd hours we played I managed a profit of nearly $400. To put that in perspective, that's 200x the big blind, or a week's earnings. This time, I wasn't so lucky. I only needed an our or so to lose all the profits I'd made in the last week. I've learned my lesson. I will never again gamble until my new project is earning the kind of income that'll allow me to gamble like that. Mark my words. The events that took place tonight will not have been in vain. I've learned my lesson. In order to launch the site I can't have any fuck up's like today. So it was written, so it shall be done. Have a great night. JM.

HotelPal
Jacob's first app this week is HotelPal. This app is surprisingly well designed and provides a great discovery experience for finding hotels when you're traveling.

The Cut on the Runway
Andrea's first app this week is The Cut on the Runway. This was fashion week in New York and New York Media created an official app for the experience. This app allows you to find all sorts of events, runways and after parties that happen during the event. You can also view high quality video that's much better than anything on YouTube. Andrea really likes this app and it's free so why not?

Sand Slides
Next up, Jacob reviews a GAME!!! It's called Sand Slides and he really likes the fact that the game integrates the iPad interface well, rather than trying to force non-native gameplay onto the iPad. The game is challenging and as with everything else this week, it's free.

Marvel Comics
Andrea wanted to celebrate Marvel Vs Capcom coming out this week( for the episode of This Week in Video Games click here), Andrea looked at Marvel Comics. There's also a DC Comics app as well.

My new iPad or the importance of getting what you want

I remember January 27 2010 very well. During this time I was coming in late to work in order to call international clients and as a side bonus, I was able to use a wifi connection that let me stream video to my phone. But this wasn't the usual YouTube or podcast night, this night something special was available. Earlier that day, Apple INC had announced a revolutionary new tablet computer called the iPad. I'd followed the announcement via liveblog that morning but I wanted to see it myself. So when I went to work I started downloading the file. About an hour later, I started watching and it was amazing. Steve Jobs was at the top of his form introducing the iPad to the world. But it wasn't until I watched him and Phil Schiller use it that I realized it's potential. This was a complete shift in the way that people interact with computers. And I immediately wanted one. That feeling never subsided through all the trials and tribulations of the last year. It wasn't simply a desire to own the latest Apple device, though I admit that was a part of it. The fact is that I wanted an iPad because I am convinced that in 10 years we will look back on it with the reverence a historic product like it deserves. Another key factor in my desire for an iPad was the fact that I've never owned a new computer before. These factors combined to maintain a level of admiration for the iPad that I've never had prior to it, and thus far haven't had since. A year passes since the announcement and I still haven't been able to buy one when the stars align to allow me to make one of the most important purchases of my life. First, after 7 months of struggling, I finally secure a job. Second I get a home based job I can work on the side for extra income. Third and most importantly, I get my tax refund. While I'm technically able to purchase an iPad, I'm hesitant to do so. The reason is that I have been broke for so long that I've become used to scraping by and I'm not in a hurry to go back to that. And frankly, I probably shouldn't have made the purchase but I had a unique set of circumstances come in to play that allowed me to finally make my purchase without remorse. First was my side job. Frankly it doesn't pay too well but that isn't the the point. The point is that I have a way outside my job of earning money. Second and much more important was that I finally purchased a wifi router for my house. Ever since I started online I'd always needed to go somewhere to access the Internet. Now, I had a cellular wifi router I could take anywhere so the "it's neat but I can't use it at home" rebuttal went away. Finally, the same "being broke for 75% of 2010" issue that had held me back now was motivating me to get what I wanted. So I decided to challenge myself. I'd get the iPad and then I'd use my side job to pay myself back. But of course while it would've made an interesting thought experiment, I knew myself well enough to know that if I didn't actually get it, I'd lose the motivation I had to work and pay myself back. Several years back I read "Rich Dad Poor Dad" and one of the lessons I took from the book was that poor people will say "I can't afford it" and shut their mind down while rich people ask "how can I afford it" and use their imaginations to find a solution that allows them to have the things they desire. I'm putting that theory to the ultimate test. While I had the ability to purchase my iPad it wasn't a tremendously good idea to do so without having a way to pay it back. The fact is that I'm not a terribly materialistically motivated person. I don't often have the drive to get things the way I did with my iPad. But in order to achieve my long term goals, I have to change how I look at earning money. This was the first step. Stay tuned. I'll be posting updates occasionally about the progress I've made to pay myself back. 2011 is going to be a fun year. Because I'm goin' up! :) $$

This Week in iPad Valentines day special

Cold Open
Today on This Week in iPad, we're looking at Battleheart in the iPad game of the week, is iPad 3 coming out this fall, and Andrea and Jacob are feeling the love in a Valentine's day Planet of the Apps, coming up this week.

iPad Game of the Week!
This week's game is challenging but in a fun way. It's called Battleheart and it's from Mika Mobile. It's fun, it integrates the iPad user interface well, and it's cute. What else do you need?

News

Qualcomm and CAA Backing Mobile Apps
According to TechCrunch, talent agency CAA and technology company Qualcomm are teaming up to bring new characters and franchises to multiple platforms. The intent is not to licence existing material but to create new characters like the Angry Birds.

iPad 3!!!!!!!!!(?)
Noted blogger John Gruber recently posted a number of reasons why he thinks the iPad 3 will be coming this fall.(He's been remarkably accurate in the past about these things.) He says that the April release cycle that the iPad is on now made sense while there wasn't any competition in the touchscreen tablet market, but now that RIM and Android are developing serious competitors, the iPad needs to be on a schedule that can compete. That said, Apple doesn't want to go a year and a half without a new release so they're going to update the iPad the same way they updated the iPhone 3G to the 3GS. After that, they'll release a new version in September and stick to a fall release schedule from now on. Jacob's not sure it makes sense, but he's going to wait until the iPad 2 is unveiled to pass any judgement on the validity of this rumor.

Planet Of the Apps!

Valentine's Day Apps

Andrea's first app this week is Valentine's Day Hidden Objects. This app challenges users to find several objects hidden in Valentine's day scenes. There's no time limit and no prize. and unfortunately no reason to buy this app. Skip it.

Love Scanometer
Andrea picked Jacob's apps this week and the first one is Love Scanometer, a lovely little app that allows users to determine their compatibility using their iOS device(The app works on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad). That said, it's free so don't expect a lot from the app.

ScrapPad
Andrea's next app this week is ScrapPad - Valentine's Day,, an adaptation of the popular ScrapPad app from Album Art LLC. You can use this app to create Valentine's cards on your iPad.

Be Mine
Jacobs final app this week is just like ScrapPad, except it's horrible. Be Mine scares Jacob. It's cheesy and you should avoid it.

Winner: Jacob and Andrea both think that ScrapPad wins this week.

This Week in iPad episode 42

Cold Open
Today on This Week in iPad, we have another great game of the week, we're discussing the update to the App Store, and it's all about travel in Planet of the apps.

iPad Game of the week!
Our iPad game of the week this week is Hysteria project 2, a game that Andrea really wanted to like given the recent success of games like Dead Space. The game has a VERY long intro that you can't skip, and you never get hints until after you've died.

Vopium is a great way to call internationally without paying high fees to do so. How it works is, you make a call to Vopium's local number, and Vopium will route the call for you so you can talk to your friends abroad for as little as a tenth of what it would cost normally. Vopium is available on the Apple App store, the Android market, the Ovi Store, and Blackberry app world. You'll get 15 minutes free and 15 free text messages, and after that's it's pay as you go.

iPad App Store Updated
The App store for iPad received several updates this week including the ability to filter search results by Category, Release Date, Rating, Price, and Device. There's no need to look for the update, the next time you launch the App store, the update will be pushed to your device.

The Daily Launches
The Daily, a news application from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp has launched after months of anticipation. Verizon Wireless is providing free service for two weeks to everyone who downloads the app. Once the subscription does kick in, the costs will be $0.99 per week or $39.99 per year.

Apple Rejects Sony App
Sony's E-Reader app was rejected this week on the basis that the app doesn't use the in-app purchase model Apple requires. Normally, any app that features the ability to purchase additional media must use this channel, but the Kindle, Borders, and nook app all use other methods. It should be fun to see how Apple handles this in the weeks to come.

Planet of the Apps
Travel Apps

Direction Known
Andrea's first app this week is Direction Known. It's a cute app, and it's free but it's not terribly useful. Also, you sometimes(as we saw this week) have to reorient the compass by waving the device around and that just looks silly.

Kayak
Jacob's first app this week is Kayak. This app takes the features of the site uses the touch interface very well. The app is free and in Jacob's opinion, everyone should have it.

allTransit
Next up, Andrea takes a look at allTransit. This is a collection of the subway maps all around the world. The maps download directly to your device so it doesn't need to be connected to the internet. They're also easy to read and the app features a great selection.

FlightBoard
Jacob's final app this week is FlightBoard. The app lists departure and arrival times in real time. Also if you have the Flight Track Pro app, the two work together to allow you to find a track flights in real time.

Winner
Andrea and Jacob both agree that the best app this week was Kayak.

Thank you
Thank you again to our sponsors this week, Vopium.

iPad Game of the Week

(Before we get into this week's game, Andrea featured the Fling game controller.)

This week's game of the week is Dead Space. The best way to experience this game is to use a set of headphones. The game's sound effects really immerse you in the universe. The game is $9.99 so you can get a sample of Dead Space without committing $60 for the console game.

No News
Last thursday marked the one year anniversary of the iPad's initial announcement by Apple and as of yet, there's no date set for the release of iPad 2.

News Corp Sets Date for the Daily
"The Daily", an iPad only news app will premiere on February 2 according to PCMAG. The announcement will also herald official iOS support for subscriptions, something the publishing industry has wanted since the iPad was introduced last year.

Adobe to Update Packager with iPad Support
Adobe has released an update to it's Packager software to give Flash developers access to several iOS gestures, most notably the "pinch". Jacob has no idea why any Flash developer would need that feature. If you know of a Flash app using pinch, tweet us @TWiiPad.

Planet of the Apps!

Lifestyle apps

Van Gogh HD
Andrea's first app this week is Van Gogh HD. This is a virtual gallery of the painter's most famous works. The app is currently on sale for $1.99. The developer also has several other artists available as well.

AppStart
Jacob's first app this week is AppStart. Jacob wanted to hate this app but once he got it, he was impressed. The app allows users to find the apps(insert Xzibit joke here). It's a beautiful app and well worth the $0.99.

Find A Pint
Andrea's next app is Find A Pint. This app allows users to find bars in their local area. The only downside to the app is that the library is being generated by users so the app is a bit lean on info for now.

CraigsPro
Jaco's final app this week is CraigsPro. This app takes the Craigslist database and makes it easy to search. The functionality of the app is very good but the integration is a bit off. The price ranking could be better and the app goes against the simplicity inherent in the design of the site.

Winner: This week the hosts are split. Andrea thinks that CraigsPro won while Jacob thinks that AppStart was the best this week.

We leave you with this great video of a guy playing the theme from Zelda on his iPad. See you next week!

Apple Crushes Expectations
Apple released their first quarter financial report this week and exceeded analysts expectations by more than $2Billion. This news actually overshadowed Steve Jobs' announcement that he was taking a medical leave for an undetermined amount of time. As Jacob pointed out, the timing of the announcement could have been a factor.

ShopKeep
A company called ShopKeep has developed an iPad based cash register that features AirPrint and even rings when a sale is processed. Here's a video demonstrating it in a coffee shop inside Grand Central Station in New York City.

Andrea's next app this week is 101 Language Learning Tips, another list style app. The app is just a text document that has been ported to the iPad.

Jacob's last app this week is Articles. This app is a Wikipedia browser that's a great way to browse the site. The app also wins Planet of the Apps this week.

Thanks to Davide Di Cello. See you next week!

This Week in iPad iTunes Giveaway

Cold Open
Today on This Week in iPad, we have our very first iPad games showcase, plus we're going to show you how to win a $10,000 iTunes card.

Special Guest
Today, Jacob is sitting in the "dunce" chair because we have a special guest, Wall E. Wailbaecher from Mahalo games.

Follow us!
As always you can follow the show on Twitter @TWiiPad and you can follow Andrea @AndreaRene and Jacob @JacobBurch. You can also email us at ipad@thisweekin.com. If you enjoy the show, why not subscribe? You can do that at youtube.com/thisweekin.

iPad Games Showcase
Rather than pick one game per week, there's so many that we decided to have a showcase of the best this week. To help us we have Wall E. Wailbaecher, head of iPad games at Mahalo.

Spirits For iPad
First up is Spirits For iPad a puzzle game much like Lemmings. It's unique and at $4.99 is a great deal.

N.O.V.A. 2
Next is N.O.V.A. 2 a game that is a bit of a Halo clone. It has great graphics, and while the controls are a bit too sensitive, you can get used to it fairly quickly. Despite that, it's a great game and well worth the $6.99.

World of Goo
Last, is World Of Goo", a physics based game where you use little goo-guys to build a tower. The game really integrates well with the touch interface and is a lot of fun. Also, the game has been receiving so much attention that the developer has cut the price in half from $9.99 to $4.99.

Planet of the Apps
Entertainment and Media apps

E! LIve From the Red Carpet
First up this week, Andrea takes a look at Live From the Red Carpet. The app features live coverage from all the awards shows coming up, as well as news and movie openings. It's also free.

CNN
Jacob's first app this week is the CNN app for iPad. His question when downloading the app was "What does this offer that the website doesn't?" The app is well designed and while the website is good, the app makes use of the iPad screen size and offers rich media the site doesn't. It's free as well.

CBS Sports
Next, Andrea is a huge football fan, so naturally she wanted to try CBS Sports Pro Football. There are a lot of football apps out there but this is easy to read, free, and gives you content without having to pay for it. If you are a fantasy player this app has integration. A problem with the app is the video is not in HD.

msnbc featuring Rachel Maddow
Jacob's last app this week is msnbc featuring Rachel Maddow. You can follow along with the show using the app. The app is good, but the blog integration needs to be better. It uses a simple web kit browser now and Jacob thinks it takes away from the app experience.

Winner: Wall E. thinks the best app this week is CNN!

This week in iPad CES special

Cold Open
We're going guerrilla style with Guerrilla Bob in the iPad game review, plus we've got Amanda Coolong from This Week in Cloud Computing live from CES on This Week in iPad.

Twitter
You can follow the show on twitter @TWiiPad. You can also follow Andrea @andrearene and Jacob @jacobburch. You can also email the show ipad@thisweekin.com. Plus we have two chatrooms you can join in. The first is at youtube.com/thiweekin and the second is at ustream.tv/thisweekin. Please join us. We'd love to hear from you.

iPad Game of the Week!
For this week's game Andrea chose Guerrilla Bob HD. Normally, Andrea goes with the hottest game of the week. This week she chose a game that isn't necessarily wildly popular, but it's fun. The gameplay is good for a joystick shooter on a touchscreen and there's multiple levels to conquer. Best of all, the game is only $0.99, cheaper than the iPhone version.

CES 2011
This week, thousands of companies displayed new and upcoming products at the Consumer Electronics Show. Amanda Coolong was among the visitors and called the show to share some what's coming in electronics.

Planet of the Apps
Fitness Apps
We've covered fitness apps before but we wanted to come back to the category because of the new year.

Dotti's Food Score
Andrea's first app this week is Dotti's Food Score. It allows you to look up foods on the fly. You can find nutritional info and weightwatchers points of any food you have.

LIVESTRONG Calorie Tracker
Jacob's first app this week is the LIVESTRONG Calorie Tracker. The app seems poorly designed and clunky and unless you're a heavy livestrong.com user, Jacob says avoid it because there are apps that are free that do the same thing as this and are free. Andrea mentioned this as an example.

FitnessClass
Next, Andrea reviews FitnessClass. The app allows users to scroll through several workout and fitness programs although they aren't free.

Dreambot
Jacob's final app this week is Dreambot. Jacob used to be a bit overweight and the number one thing he attributes to his weight loss was quitting caffeine and getting a full nights sleep. This app plays ambient noise to help you get to sleep. Although you can fade the screen, the ads don't go away and if you lock the screen, the app stops working. That said, it's free so why not?

Winner: Jacob and Andrea think that Dotti's is the best app this week.
